If you have Medi-Cal, you almost certainly have dental coverage β but figuring out what's actually included can feel like reading a government manual in a second language. This post breaks it down in plain English so you know what to expect before you walk through the door.
Medi-Cal vs. Denti-Cal: Same Program, Different Name
Here's the quick version: Denti-Cal is the dental portion of Medi-Cal. They're not two separate insurance plans. Medi-Cal covers medical care; Denti-Cal is what kicks in when you need dental work. If you're enrolled in Medi-Cal, you automatically get Denti-Cal benefits β no separate application needed.
What Denti-Cal Covers in 2026
California expanded Denti-Cal benefits significantly in recent years, and 2026 coverage for adults includes:
Preventive care β routine cleanings, exams, and X-rays are covered at no cost to you
Fillings β for decayed teeth, covered
Extractions β including simple and surgical extractions
Root canals β on certain teeth (coverage varies; ask your dentist)
Dentures β full and partial dentures are included
Crowns β covered when medically necessary
Emergency dental care β pain relief and urgent treatment
Children covered under Medi-Cal typically receive even broader coverage, including orthodontic treatment when medically necessary.
What Denti-Cal Does NOT Cover
Denti-Cal isn't unlimited. A few common things that are either excluded or require prior authorization:
Cosmetic procedures (teeth whitening, veneers for appearance only)
Implants β not currently covered for most adults
Some specialty orthodontics for adults
Procedures that need prior approval but weren't pre-authorized
When in doubt, your dentist can check with Denti-Cal before starting treatment. We do this routinely so you're never surprised by a bill.
How Verification Works
Before your appointment, we'll verify your Denti-Cal eligibility and benefits. Here's what that process looks like:
You provide your Medi-Cal ID (a card, or just your member ID number)
We check coverage in the Denti-Cal system β usually takes a few minutes
We confirm which services are covered for you specifically
If anything needs prior authorization, we handle that paperwork
You don't need to become an expert in insurance rules. That's our job.
What's Free, What's Reduced Cost
For most Medi-Cal beneficiaries, preventive dental care β cleanings, exams, X-rays β is completely free. There are no copays for these services. For some other covered procedures, there may be a small copay depending on your specific Medi-Cal plan type, but these are typically modest.
If you're not sure whether a service will cost you anything out of pocket, just ask us before treatment. No guessing, no surprises.
Finding a Denti-Cal Provider Near You
Not every dentist accepts Denti-Cal, and the network can change year to year. If you're in the City Heights, El Cajon Boulevard, or Kearny Mesa area, we accept Denti-Cal and are accepting new patients.
Learn more about insurance options we accept, or visit our Denti-Cal dentist page for specifics on how we handle Medi-Cal patients at our practice.
