Teeth whitening that actually works
Over-the-counter strips can help a little. Professional whitening β applied by a dentist with the right concentration of gel β does a lot more, a lot faster. Most patients see a difference the same day.
It is one of the most affordable cosmetic treatments we offer, and one of the quickest. If you are self-conscious about discoloration from coffee, tea, age, or past smoking, this is usually the first thing worth exploring.
We will be straight with you about what whitening can fix and what it cannot β some stains respond beautifully, others require a different approach.
What teeth whitening actually does β and what it doesn't
Professional whitening uses hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gel to break up stain molecules inside the enamel β the outer layer of the tooth. The gel penetrates the enamel and oxidizes the compounds that cause yellowing, leaving the enamel lighter.
It does not change the color of any dental work you already have: crowns, veneers, fillings, and bonding all stay the same shade. It also will not fix staining caused by tetracycline antibiotics, excess fluoride during development (fluorosis), or tooth trauma β those require veneers or bonding.
In-office whitening
- β’ Single appointment: 60 β 90 minutes
- β’ Higher-concentration gel (only safe in-chair)
- β’ Gums protected throughout
- β’ Results visible same day
- β’ Touch-up trays sent home
Take-home trays
- β’ Custom trays molded to your teeth
- β’ Worn 30 β 60 min/day for 1 β 2 weeks
- β’ Lower concentration, gradual results
- β’ Reuse trays for future touch-ups
- β’ More flexible for busy schedules
Durability: most patients see results last 1 to 3 years before noticeable re-staining occurs. Diet and habits are the biggest variables.
Who whitening works well for β and who might need something else
Good candidates
- β Yellowing from coffee, tea, red wine, or tobacco
- β Age-related darkening of natural teeth
- β Generally healthy teeth and gums
- β No or minimal existing dental work in visible areas
- β Realistic expectations β brighter, not blindingly white
May not be the right fit
- β Active cavities or untreated gum disease (treat first)
- β Tetracycline staining (intrinsic; veneers work better)
- β Fluorosis (may whiten unevenly)
- β Severe enamel erosion or exposed dentin
- β Crowns or veneers in the front smile zone
- β Pregnant or nursing (postpone elective treatment)
We check all of this at the consultation. If whitening is not the right tool, we will tell you β and suggest what is.
What whitening costs
We quote your exact cost at the consultation β pricing depends on which option fits your teeth and timeline. For context on what professional whitening typically costs across the region: the ADA notes that professional in-office whitening in the US typically ranges from around $300 to $600; take-home tray systems from $100 to $400. San Diego-area pricing is generally in that range. We will tell you our exact cost before anything is scheduled.
Insurance: Cosmetic whitening is not covered by dental insurance. It is considered elective.
HSA / FSA: Generally not eligible for cosmetic whitening, since it is not classified as a medical necessity under most plans. Check your specific plan.
Financing: We can discuss payment options at your appointment. CareCredit is one option patients commonly use for cosmetic work.
Cost ranges are public regional averages, not our specific pricing. Confirm your quote during the consultation.
What to expect at each visit
In-office whitening β single appointment
- 1Shade check (5 min): We photograph and record your starting shade so you can compare results.
- 2Gum protection (10 min): A soft barrier or gel shield is applied to protect your gum tissue from the whitening agent.
- 3Gel application (30 β 45 min): Professional-strength peroxide gel is applied to your teeth. We may apply it in 2 β 3 cycles of 15 minutes each.
- 4Rinse and reveal (5 min): Gel is removed, gum barrier lifted. We compare to the starting shade.
- 5Aftercare review (5 min): We review what to avoid for the next 48 hours and provide take-home trays if included.

Care after whitening
The 48 hours immediately following whitening matter most β enamel pores are temporarily more open and absorb stains more readily.
- β’ Avoid for 48 hours: coffee, tea, red wine, dark juices, tomato sauce, mustard, berries, tobacco
- β’ Drink through a straw for dark beverages in the first 48 hours if you cannot avoid them
- β’ Sensitivity: mild sensitivity is normal β use a sensitivity toothpaste (potassium nitrate) for a few days
- β’ Maintenance: use your take-home trays every few months to extend results
- β’ Ongoing: whitening toothpaste can help slow re-staining, but it will not re-whiten
- β’ Schedule: most patients need a touch-up every 12 β 24 months, depending on diet
