About Dental Exams & Cleanings
A dental exam typically takes 30 to 60 minutes and gives your dentist a complete picture of your oral health. The visit usually begins with updated digital X-rays, which use significantly less radiation than traditional film X-rays and produce instant, high-resolution images of your teeth, roots, and jawbone. Your dentist then performs a thorough visual inspection of each tooth, your gums, tongue, and the surrounding soft tissue, checking for cavities, gum disease, signs of oral cancer, and any other concerns.
Professional cleanings remove plaque and hardened tartar (calculus) that regular brushing and flossing cannot reach, especially along the gumline, between teeth, and behind the back molars. A dental hygienist uses specialized instruments to gently scale away buildup, then polishes your teeth to remove surface stains and smooth the enamel. Fluoride treatment may be applied afterward to strengthen tooth enamel and help prevent future decay.
For patients with early signs of gum disease, your dentist may recommend a deeper cleaning called scaling and root planing, which treats below the gumline. This is different from a routine prophylactic cleaning and may require more than one visit. Your dentist will explain the difference and why the deeper treatment is being recommended before beginning any work.
Most adults benefit from exams and cleanings every six months, though your dentist may recommend a different schedule -- every three to four months for patients with gum disease, or once a year for patients with consistently excellent oral health. Children should begin dental visits by age one or within six months of their first tooth erupting. Insurance coverage for preventive exams is typically among the most generous benefits in any dental plan. Most private insurance plans cover two exams and two cleanings per year at 100 percent, with no deductible. Medi-Cal and Denti-Cal also cover preventive exams and cleanings at no cost to the patient. Between visits, daily brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day remain the foundation of oral health.
